Bloomberg gives millions to European cities

This week in Berlin, 21 European cities emerged as finalists in the 2013-2014 Mayors Challenge, which will give EUR 9 million in funding for innovative solutions to urban problems.

Bloomberg Philanthropies has organised the competition to inspire cities to generate innovative ideas that solve major challenges and improve city life, according to their press announcement. It is hoped the winning projects can spread to other cities.

One grand prize winner will receive EUR 5 million for the most creative and transferable idea. Four additional cities will be awarded EUR 1 million, and all will be announced in the fall.

Like the SEiSMiC project, the finalists in the Bloomberg competition address several of Europe’s most critical urban challenges: youth unemployment, aging populations, civic engagement, economic development, environment and energy concerns, public health and safety, and making government more efficient.
